I have a hard time with that - maybe it's because of they way lots of people, including myself, pronounce it. I say "def-ih-nuht-lee" which makes me want to spell it "d-e-f-i-n-a-t-e-l-y". When I write it out I actually have to say in my head "de-feye-night-lee" in order to make myself spell it right.

Another word I have trouble with is "separate". In fact just now I had to re-type it 3 times to get it right. To me, the adjective form of this word, based on it's pronunciation, should be spelled "separate" (the correct way), while the verb form should be spelled "seperate". I used to get yelled at about this in grad school - and I was a scientist! It just drove my advisor crazy but I had the hardest time learning. I thought maybe I had them backwards until I read an article about how 'separate' is one of THE most commonly misspelled words on the internet or something. It was only then I realized there was only one proper spelling of that word.

separate always gets me too!

"Separate," "definitely" and "recommend" always get me. Every single time. In fact, I misspelled (sp?) "separate" on my first try.

Don't tell my students.

Thank goodness I am not the only person who has major problems spelling definitely!! If we all spell it differently, maybe it needs to evolve to the more common spelling?

Definately.

I only spell separate correctly because my mom told me to remember there is "a rat" in the middle of it.

(and while I wasn't a scientist, I was a High School Grammar teacher.)
